How to Check your Roof for Damage after a Hurricane

During this time of year in the Panhandle, storms can threaten our property and our lives. It’s important to stay safe, protect your property and know how to check for damage following a hurricane. Because roofs are the most susceptible part of a home when it comes to rain and wind damage, it’s crucial to know what to check for following a storm.

Broken or missing materials need to be accounted for so you can better assess the damage. Look for missing shingles, tile and slate or broken shingles or seams to prevent further damage. If you have a chimney, check the exterior for any broken pieces or objects that have obstructed the opening. Make sure to scan the entirety of your roof for holes and gaps so you can make an immediate plan to patch or fix the holes to stop any potential water damage to your property. Clear any loose debris from the top of the roof and check all gutters for objects or compromised pieces of the gutters.

It’s important to note all damage so you can plan for repairing the necessary parts. Although minor damages and repairs can be made by homeowners with experience in the field, it’s important to get a professional assessment to protect your home more effectively.
