How to Prepare Your Home Before a Hurricane Evacuation

How to Prepare Your Home Before a Hurricane Evacuation

Although some storms call for a home evacuation, it can be scary to leave your property behind due to a hurricane warning. However, you can help ease your anxiety (a little bit!) by properly preparing your home prior to evacuating.   Take Picture of Your Property Before you leave, make sure to do a walk around of the house and take pictures to use as a reference if you do experience damage following a hurricane. This will help with any insurance claims following the storm.   Take Inventory This includes both inside and outside. It’s important to take pictures of all your possession, big and small, so you can account for what is missing or damaged if you experience catastrophic damage.   Unplug and Elevate Before you leave, unplug all appliances, and elevate anything that might corrode if your home floods. Put Away Lawn Furniture and Create a Water Divergent All outside furniture should be moved inside or under shelter before you leave. Additionally, ensure there is path for water to flow AWAY from your home and into a storm drain.   Secure Every Opening All openings including doors, windows and garage doors should be properly covered and prepped. All interior doors should be closed, and exterior doors should be boarded and/or sealed. Sand bags should also be placed around all exterior entrances to provide additional protection.
